Is it safe to set up awstats on an interworx server? Are there any special things I have to do to pull this off?

It should work fine, just turn 'on' transfer log saving for each SiteWorx account and then parse the logs dumped into /home/<user>/var/<domain>/logs/transfer.log daily.
