SMTP level virus scanning allows ClamAV to scan email as it comes in to the SMTP server. This allows ClamAV to stop threats before they ever reach the system. If ClamAV detects a virus it will cause the SMTP service to reject the message.
Click the System Services menu item if it is not already open.
Click the Mail Server menu item if it is not already open.
Click the Virus Filtering menu item.
Locate the ClamAV Control section.
Click the button.
You will see the following message at the top of the screen: Service successfully stopped.
If you have SMTP virus scanning enabled and you stop the ClamAV service, mail delivery will stop until the ClamAV service is restarted or SMTP virus scanning is disabled.
The stop and start procedures that follow assume that SMTP virus scanning is enabled. Freshclam is the automatic virus definition update service used by ClamAV. If this is enabled, ClamAV will always have the most recent virus definitions.
