Dave Sheranko: In a shared environment, spam directly impacts everyone using the same mailserver by killing that IP's reputation. By limiting the number of outbound emails that each account can send per hour, you can help limit the damage to your infrastructure and reputation. Not only does this help protect against malicious users, but it can also be used to help mitigate compromised / exploited sites. This can be also used to help differentiate between price tiers. The $10 hosting plan might allow 60 messages per hour, while the $25 plan allows 600 per hour. Ideally, you'd be able to set both hourly and daily limits. I might want to limit a customer to 60 emails per hour, 300 emails per day. If the customer exceeds the limit, a message to the customer informing them of this would be a nice touch.

  7. swgr25: I agree, spam is a big issue. Another common issue is PHP scripts sending many messages if they have been hacked. Somehow must be able to limit mail() calls per vhost.

  8. Richard: Exim is in use with the DirectAdmin panel. The panel allows a central settings of the Daily allowed outgoing emails. Next to that you can limit the number per user by adding a file in /etc/virtual/limit_ As of the newest release, you can set this limit in the panel per user in stead of manually creating files. I would like to see a similar functionality to limit SiteWorx accounts. 1. it prevents a lot of spammails going out. 2. warnings are send so we can investigate 3. prevents users from running their own autoresponder system on shared hosting. Hope this adds to the feature request ;-) If any questions on my experience with the limits, feel free to ask.
